Legacies on the Mound: Black Baseball Players in North Dakota History

  • July 20, 2025
  • 2:00 PM
  • Russell Reid Auditorium @ North Dakota Heritage Center

Presented by baseball historian and author Phil S. Dixon, this free event commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Bismarck Churchills’ historic win at the first National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita, Kansas.

Dixon will highlight the careers of Black baseball legends who played in North Dakota, including Hall of Famer Satchel Paige. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Dixon is a co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City and has spent more than 30 years documenting African American sports history. He is the author of nine books and has received both the Casey Award for Best Baseball Book and the Society of American Baseball Researchers’ MacMillan Award.

Program is free and open to the general public. We encourage you to attend this unique and meaningful look at a lesser-known part of North Dakota history.
